Sunday State of Mind: February 13th-February 19th

We are living in a post Super Bowl/current NBA All-Star Weekend era, which makes SSM a little more of a wild card these days.

A very special birthday, happened on Friday
A guy who played a little ball while in the NBA
Baseball not so much, but brave enough to try
Michael Jordan’s 60, makes me want to cry

Tiger made a cut this week, the Genesis Open
He won’t win the event though, dry spell won’t be broken
Was able to walk all four days, a good physical sign
Maybe a few more tournaments to get things back in line

Arizona/Florida, batting cages pop
Pitchers running to first base, off the mound they hop
Hope springs eternal, everybody has a chance
Spring Training has started, baseball fans will dance

Speaking of Spring Training, Jacob deGrom is back
Hurt after about an hour, got right back on track
When the guy is healthy he’s as good as it gets
But if he breathes a certain way his body’s on the fritz

Rough week for Purdue, on the basketball floor
Former number one has lost three of their last four
Top ranking in college hoops seems to be a curse
Crimson Tide lost this week too, put the top dogs in a hearse

Sunday State of Mind: October 31st-November 6th

We had the last sports equinox of the year this week. That and more in our latest SSM.

World Series is over, new kings have been crowned
Astros win another one, and are parade bound
No trash can drama this time, at least no rumors yet
If you were to wager though, might not be a bad bet

Some major programs going down in college football
Alabama lost again, Tennessee also did fall
Clemson also lost to an unranked Notre Dame
This part of the football season never comes up lame

We got vintage Tom Brady against the LA Rams
Still trying to beat the notion that the Bucs are shams
Come back win, fourth quarter drive, TB played the right cards
Also became the first QB with 100k yards

Other end of the spectrum, one guy just getting started
Justin Fields running the ball at a level uncharted
Broke the rushing record for a QB in a game
One hundred seventy-eight yards, left the field aflame

The biggest story of the week, what else can we say
The Nets made the right move by keeping Kyrie at bay
Terrible post, terrible week, he doesn’t seem to care
The constant act this guy gives us is starting to wear

Sunday State of Mind: October 10th-October 16th

This week in sports has been absolutely banana sandwich. SSM is here to relive it all.

Alabama/Tennessee, singing Rocky Top
Volunteer offense was rolling, and refused to stop
Hendon Hooker and the boys put up 52
Bama defense, usually good, but last night they blew

Playoff baseball heating up, and upsets galore
Dodgers out, Braves out, who surprised you more?
NLCS matchup of the Padres and the Phillies
Yes you read that matchup right, no not joking, really

Over in the AL, Astros wrecked the M’s
A 3-0 series sweep, Houston played a gem
Guardians and Yankees play to see who gets the ‘stros
Yankees ahead at time of writing, can the bombers close?

We have to ask the question: are the Jets for real?
Went on the road and got a dub down at Lambeau Field
Impressive for a young team, tough place to play for sure
And against Aaron Rodgers, a win they procure

Sunday State of Mind: October 3rd-October 9th

There’s a fall chill in the air, which means playoff baseball and midseason football. All of that and more in this week’s SSM.

A big win out in London, New York beat Green Bay
The New York Football Giants, feeling some type of way
Starting the season 4-1, football’s biggest surprise
Lamar Jackson comes in next week, they may just get baptized

Speaking of baptisms, Jets dunked on the ‘Fins
Miami started 3-1, left with the same amount of wins
Jets have won two straight, sit a game behind the Bills
New York’s cold dead football hearts may be getting filled

Even without their quarterback, ‘bama is the best
Beat Texas A&M, could probably beat the rest
Of the country’s teams, Saban is just that good
The best to ever do it, that is understood

A team worthy of mention, your Kansas Jayhawks
Dream start to the season, some undefeated talks
Hung tough with TCU, but just fell short by seven
Even with a loss, Kansas football fans in heaven

As mentioned in our opening, playoff baseball is here
MLB Wild Card weekend, get your hot dogs and beer
Three game sets were over quick, Cleveland Seattle Philly
Having so much sports at once is absolutely silly

It Just Means More When Jimbo & Nick Get Pissy In Press Conferences

We’re playing the feud!

In the new age of NIL, it’s the wild west when it comes to NCAA “recruiting.” Money’s out in the open, and college prospects are finally getting what they deserve for the services rendered to their chosen university.

In the ultimate pot calling the kettle black move, two of the college football’s richest coaches from two of the richest universities are now pissing into the wind about it.

On Monday, Nick Saban launched a verbal grenade on the current state of recruiting, singling out ‘ol Jimbo and the boys down at Texas A&M:

Nicky…sweet sweet Nicky. It’s incredible that you can look yourself in the mirror after spewing that garbage. It’s all in the open now baby, just let it fly. We all know everyone’s been dropping bags on recruits for years, now it’s just legal. It’s not the fact that you did it, as everyone else does, it’s the “holier than thou” smear campaign that you never took part in it. Maybe not you directly but, you know what’s going on. We all do.

Jimbo put his big boy britches on in response to Saban; some of the highlights below:

Sheeeeeeeeeesh.

Both of these guys are acting like clowns, including Texas A&M saying Saban “violated SEC Sportsmanship Rules,” and guess what? It’s working. Football is king and the second NBA & NHL Playoffs pick up, baseball gets into the chunk of their season, and the PGA Championship is on, guess what we’re reading about? SEC drama baby.

Alabama and Texas A&M meet up on October 8th this year when the Aggies head down to Tuscaloosa. Probably have to tune in to that one.

Why isn’t the weekend five days, and the work week two days? Who knows, but we know this week’s SSM is now live.

Conference championship weekend in college football
Some teams show up, and others just fall
Utah, Bama, and Michigan were among the winners
The amount of football left keeps getting thinner and thinner

Our long national nightmare has ended, my friends
The Detroit Lions losing streak ends
A squeak out win over Minnesota
The Lions have now met their season win quota

Minshew mania, back and better than ever
Taking over Philly, Gardner’s new endeavor
A good start for him, but maybe hedge your bets
His first start and win was against the Jets

We’ve got a lockout in the MLB
Owners and players could not agree
On a new CBA, no baseball for now
Between the two sides, who will kowtow?

Best game of the season, in our opinion
OKC versus Memphis, and the Grizz went in
A record setting blowout, 73 point win
When you watch that game tape, where to even begin?

Sunday State of Mind: October 4th-October 10th

We saw anything and everything this week in sports. We look back fondly in the latest edition of Sunday State of Mind.

A rarely seen building raid, in the NFL
Washington Football Team, what in the actual hell?
Head trainer got busted, DEA involved
Wonder what the charges are, once this all gets solved

Another rarity in sports, a big time title fight
Fury/Wilder III, a boxing fan’s delight
Fury did his job, retained the title belt
A crushing blow to Wilder, to whom defeat was dealt

Number three vs. number four, in college football
Nittany Lions and Hawkeyes, big defensive brawl
Iowa losing early, came back from down 14
Huge win over PSU, a storming the field scene

Another storming happened, down in College Station
Texas A&M pulled the upset for Aggie Nation
Such a rarity to see Alabama lose
Anytime it happens it’s legit breaking news

Playoff time in baseball, division series round
Most series are tight, good matchups can be found
At the time of writing, only the White Sox down 2-0
Getting swept after their year would be a major blow

Sunday State of Mind: August 30th-September 5th

What a long holiday weekend. So long that SSM was delayed until the following week. Let’s look back at the week that was in last week’s Sunday State of Mind.

College football’s back, a fact you can’t deny
America’s favorite sport’s existence is no longer dry
Had some big time matchups, more on that below
We won’t be without football until we all see snow

Biggest matchup of the week was Georgia and Clemson
Number three and number five, pregame sounded fun
A battle of attrition, final score was 10-3
Georgia with the “upset,” week one victory

The other name brand matchup, ‘Bama and The U
Crimson Tide and Miami, Bama’s lead just grew and grew
Coach Saban and the boys took it to the Canes
A 30+ point win, all that’s left were The U’s remains

Our final review of Week 1, FSU and Notre Dame
Just another one of this debut week’s big time games
The Irish got the dub, that’s the result that’s built in
Best story from the game though, the returning McKenzie Milton

Sunday State of Mind: December 14th-December 20th

Last Sunday State of Mind before Christmas! Here’s a short, poetic recap of the week that was in this week’s SSM.

Championship Saturday in college football
Ducks, Tide, Tigers, and Buckeyes won ’em all
We’re winding down on what was an interesting year
Time for the college football playoffs, a whole other gear

Speaking of the CFP, the field has been set
It could be a playoff we won’t soon forget
Clemson/Ohio State should be a hell of a game
Alabama should absolutely boat race Notre Dame

Charlie Woods took the golf world by storm
The son of Tiger, not the norm
His gene pool is definitely doing him some favors
The kid looks like he’s on track for 200 majors

Sunday State of Mind: December 1-December 6th

Sunday is here, and so is another week of SSM.

Baker Mayfield had himself a day
Four touchdowns, 334 yards, to the Titans’ dismay
The Browns moved to 9-3 on the year
Once in a blue moon the Dawg Pound can cheer

A few big name changes, on Chicago’s North Side
Kyle Schwarber is gone, and Len Kasper has gone for a ride
To The White Sox radio both, Cubs fans were surprised
What’s going on with the Cubs? It’s hard to surmise

A big name trade in the NBA
John Wall for Russell Westbrook, what the hey?!
A few bad contracts, who both wanted to change teams
This trade will only change things in Wizards & Rockets fan’s dreams

Alabama football rolled their rival LSU
The Crimson Tide won by 38, Tigers didn’t have a clue
In this weird COVID season, one thing remains the same
Alabama is good, and they’ll probably win every game
