Settle into your Sunday with our latest edition of SSM.
Only place to start, is to send our love Vin Scully and Bill Russell, left us for above Giants of their sports, both all-time human beings A rare thing in sports that has all of us agreeing
The NFL is king, and we had it this week The Hall of Fame Game, football fans were geeked For about 10 minutes, then came in the scrubs Raiders played the Jags, Vegas got the dub
We hit the trade deadline in the MLB Buyers adding talent, sellers went to flee Biggest movers were the Pads, adding talent right and left Headliner was Juan Soto, other moves felt like theft
This week’s Sunday State of Mind is sneaking in at the very end of what was another great week in sports.
Little Kyler Murray, big contract extension A deal finally signed after some more than awkward tension Arizona ponied up the cash to pay their guy We need real football to start or else I’m gonna die
On Friday the Blue Jays put up four touchdowns Won 28-5, made the Red Sox look like clowns Toronto’s bats were hot, Sox bats were in a jam We even got to see an inside the park grand slam!
Conspiracies abound on James Harden’s deal Took way less money now, sounded like a steal Around the NBA, there seems to be some doubt If this deal is legit, or if Harden’s getting a bailout
As the sport of baseball thrives in popularity, the fearless leader of Major League Baseball bravely came out against the biased and unfair notion that minor league baseball players are criminally underpaid:
Rob Manfred: “I kind of reject the premise of the question, that minor league players are not paid a living wage"
According to the New York Times, MLB “raised pay for minor league players in 2021, with Class A minimum salaries rising from $290 to $500 a week and Class AAA salaries increasing from $502 to $700.”
These prima donna minor leaguers, $290 per week wasn’t enough? You really need half a grand a week like some kind of galavanting fast food worker? Shame on you. Last time I checked, $290 was more than enough to survive on ramen noodles, a pay by the minute phone, and an annual shopping trip to Goodwill.
What else do you need? One of this country’s biggest issues is the 1%’s hogging all of the wealth. Our lionhearted Commissioner tried as hard as he could to eliminate the unjust wage gap in America, but these greedy minor leaguers, grabbing at every dime in the couches they sleep on, overran him.
So, congratulations on living the American dream, minor league baseball players. Enjoy those mammoth paychecks and looking down at all the peasants.
Keep fighting the good fight, Commissioner Manfred. We’re proud of you.
The summer sports calendar can sometimes feel slow, but there’s always enough to recap the week that was in our latest edition of SSM.
The Old Course at St. Andrews, another major done Thought it was Rory’s weekend; but Cam Smith was the one Big weekend for the Aussie, and he’s a sight to see We’ll see if he can repeat in 2023
Chris Sale just can’t catch a break, hurt in his second start Since coming off the injured list, now again will depart A big investment for the Sox, so far has had no luck As far as we can read, no players or coaches struck
Juan Soto is a different case, no contract yet for him Turned down a big payday, future with the Nats is grim A bold decision to turn down $440 million bucks Whoever pays the man will have to bring one or two Brinks trucks
Hope you had LeBron James and DeMar DeRozan On your Drew League fantasy team, both played like the chosen In Saturday’s game, both filled up the stat book Can you imagine if LeBron chose him over Westbrook?
We’re back from a two week summer hiatus! Honestly, the only appropriate return to content is our weekly recount of the week that was in sports; Sunday State of Mind.
The Championships Wimbledon, tennis’ best Crowned two champs Sunday, better than the rest Novak won his seventh, Rybakina’s first Kyrgios was the star for his evaluation of this lady’s thirst

NBA Draft on Thursday, dreams being made Not too many surprises, they pick and we grade Kind of a boring watch, most picks are gonna miss Give it two or three years, guys are bound for the abyss
It’s a special Juneteenth and Father’s Day edition of SSM.
Only one place to start, and that’s out in The Bay The Warriors are champions again as of Thursday Steph Curry was the MVP, a well earned award The stupid “No Steph with KD” talk can now be ignored
The Colorado Avalanche are the perfect name The Lightning are the target, and they’ve got perfect aim Up 2-0 in the series, looking absolutely tough Only two wins away from hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup
The Atlanta Braves, 14-game winning streak Weekend series in Chicago, Cubbies looking bleak Baseball did the baseball thing, Cubs won the series After losing 10 in a row, beat Atlanta two of three
We’ve got our first pink slip handed out in MLB The Angles fired Joe Maddon during a losing spree The Halos started strong this year, formerly first place Twelve straight losses gets you canned, an unfortunate case
Another manager made waves, and not the calming kind Tony La Russa made a move and seemed to lose his mind Gave Trea Turner a free base, the count was 1-2 Any way you look at it, that call really blew
The NBA Finals are tight, all tied at two a piece Both teams are two wins away from making the series cease Steph Curry’s a monster, but we all knew that He’s all the Warriors have, rest of the team’s been flat
The battle for Lord Stanley is now set in stone Lightning and the Avalanche for the hockey throne Tampa Bay will go for their third straight championship Colorado’s young, could be champs in their first trip
The weather has turned as we are past the unofficial opening of summer. The beautiful forecast calls for some beautiful sports poetry.
The NBA Finals, Boston and The Bay Warriors and Celtics are here to play Al Horford and the boys took game one on the road If they win again tonight Draymond might explode
Capital One’s The Match, the QB edition Four of our top quarterbacks in the competition Brady, Rodgers, Patty, Josh, young guns verse the old ARod and TB12 took it to them for the gold
Baseball staying relevant, thanks to the NFL Tommy Pham’s a wildcard, we’re saying “what the hell?” Who hasn’t wanted to slap a fellow league member Fantasy football means a lot, Tommy’s got a temper
Avalanche and Rangers, not a lot of spoilers Both looking for a sweep against the Lightning and the Oilers Only a few shots left for Tampa and Edmonton If they don’t get it in gear both squads will soon be done
In the new age of NIL, it’s the wild west when it comes to NCAA “recruiting.” Money’s out in the open, and college prospects are finally getting what they deserve for the services rendered to their chosen university.
In the ultimate pot calling the kettle black move, two of the college football’s richest coaches from two of the richest universities are now pissing into the wind about it.
On Monday, Nick Saban launched a verbal grenade on the current state of recruiting, singling out ‘ol Jimbo and the boys down at Texas A&M:
Saban: We were 2nd in recruiting last year. A&M was first. A&M bought every player on their team. Made a deal for name, image and likeness. We didn’t buy one player. But I don’t know if we’re going to be able to sustain that in the future because more and more people are doing it https://t.co/uwEcLQa2u4
Nicky…sweet sweet Nicky. It’s incredible that you can look yourself in the mirror after spewing that garbage. It’s all in the open now baby, just let it fly. We all know everyone’s been dropping bags on recruits for years, now it’s just legal. It’s not the fact that you did it, as everyone else does, it’s the “holier than thou” smear campaign that you never took part in it. Maybe not you directly but, you know what’s going on. We all do.
Jimbo put his big boy britches on in response to Saban; some of the highlights below:
Jimbo Fisher on Nick Saban’s comments: “It's despicable. We’re taking shots at 17 year old kids. We never bought anyone. When (Saban) doesn’t get his way or things don’t go his way. Go dig into (Saban’s past). It’s despicable. It’s personal to us. And I know the guy. Really well"
Both of these guys are acting like clowns, including Texas A&M saying Saban “violated SEC Sportsmanship Rules,” and guess what? It’s working. Football is king and the second NBA & NHL Playoffs pick up, baseball gets into the chunk of their season, and the PGA Championship is on, guess what we’re reading about? SEC drama baby.
Alabama and Texas A&M meet up on October 8th this year when the Aggies head down to Tuscaloosa. Probably have to tune in to that one.
